Concept art is supposed to be used to elaborate your idea to the rest of the games development team. It allows the charterer developer to get an image of what the characters are going to look like. For the landscape modelers, it shows them how the land scape is going to appear like. Concept art would or could show coders possible code they did need to produce, an example of that is that if you need to code a gun to produce a sound when left mouse button is clicked when also setting the damage and tweaking the aiming so bullets fire correctly, for modelers It will show them how to style it, like if they want to have a steam punk or some other stylistic choice. Without concept art land scape designer would not know what kind of environment there should be, coders would not know if something would need to be code like if the environment affects the character or if you need to have a trigger for an event, modelers if not outlined how to make a kind of gun, furniture or something else would have to make multiple models just for a few to be selected and others would be throw out.
Concept art decreases the risk of making mistakes in business that is why it is commonly required by Game developers as just trying to explain your concept without art could create a lot of errors costing the company time, money and effort for example if a modeller was told to design weapons but did not know what they wanted the modeller would have to make a handful of randomly made guns and swords for their superior meaning that a ton of model would not be used.
Jaltoid is a pair or artist, animators and you tubers that I am a fan of. Jaltoid likes to get inspiriting from Japan (anime) and western cartoon designs, for me some of their best would be their stuff that is made to be simplistic and contains element from Japan cartoons (anime), other work of theirs I like would be the choice of colour pallet as it can go from normal to not normal when always keeping to a neutral colour pallet. Jaltoid creates their design not using the rule of three or the golden ratio they normally do a sketch followed by an ink layer to then they detail it and finishing it up with colouring it in, they also do a similar thing with the animation, but lately Jaltoid have not been making animation or speed runs since 4 months ago.
Example of Jaltoid sketch work
Jaltoid first starts with getting the outline of the character making that they will roughly go around later with ink to make it stand out more later. In this stage Jaltoid works out how the hands are going to look and mark parts that they plan to shade like the hair, they also draw details to bring out later. For this drawing, Jaltiod did they used a reference image to go along with the making of this image so they have a key frame to go back to while drawing the image.
Example of Jaltoid Ink work
In this step, Jaltoid goes over everything they already have with ink and then they start to add details. Jaltoid's style normally is the thick black line and light colour pallet. Jaltoid adds glasses as That’s also what their reference image has.
Example of Jaltoid colouring
Jaltoid then colours the image and does some shading of element of the character like the eye shine the shading in the hair and basic fixing mistakes.
Example of Kohei Horikoshi’s work
Kohei Horikoshi is the manga creator of My Hero Academy (Boku no hero academia) that is currently is being converted from manga to Japan cartoon (anime) and currently, it is in its second season, My Hero Academy (Boku no hero academia) is also being animated by studio bones. Because Kohei Horikoshi format is manga means that his work ends up black and white not allowing them to get a colour pallet. My Hero Academy (Boku no hero academia) is a shonen manga what means it is supposed to be a very action oriented work meaning that there is commonly a lot of fighting scenes needed, for me I like this as it fits well in the style of the character but the format also restricts what or how much you can see vs animation where animators can make the motion fluent. The way manga keeps the eye on it is by sectioning itself into parts to keep your focus from leaving.
Concept art from My Hero Academy (Boku no hero academia)
When Kohei Horikoshi was working out character design he had realized that the character Midoriya looked a lot like a character from one of his previous works show he changed him and then gave him green hair instead of black he also has changed the main female designed.
This is the concept character sheet
This is the finished character concept Kohei Horikoshi that is being used for the manga and the anime but in the manga, there are no colours as the format makes it black and white. I like the new design of Midoriya over the prototype Midoriya as mainly because the prototype Midoriya has a hair covering the majority of his face and one of thing that pokes out is a massive grin. I like how the new design kind of focus on his feet and chest most likely due to it being a colour that stands out on the character drawing the eye to it.
I personally like and understand the reasons why it is useful to have concept art knowing how something should turn out is better than assuming what is needed to develop a game as assuming can make an error that can cost people time, effort and money. Without concept art, a modeler trying to make something like landscape, character and/or an item would not know how to style their project what would have wasted the time of everyone.
